monday: went for another little wander into town last night, via a local moulin (windmill) built in 1791,
saw the pink church, and amazingly found our little cat friend, the one that followed us all the way back
to the van! - bless it : ) (didn't make the same mistake this eve though, stayed put).
had a hot choccie in a small cafe, and then got caught out by the looming rain clouds,
and properly soaked on the way back.
....the place where we are parked turned pretty boggy too, c lost her flipflop running back to the van
in the quite deep water (but found it - phew!)....
kept awake by the very heavy rain, loud cracks of thunder and lightening, plus the worry that we might
just float away...kept looking to see if the other vans were on the move, but it was all quiet....
woke up this am, pretty tired, to find we were in the middle of our own personal lake!! all the
water seemed to have settled exactly where we parked!! typical!! ha ha
laughed a lot when the german van next to us saw us practically wringing out our plastic mat - which
had drowned in the night! : (
packed up, bike on and off towards the camargue today....going to have a break from city visits, and
hopefully get away from this rain too!!
lovely drive across the marshes, very different landscape from fontvieille and surrounds, and to an aire/
campsite at carnon because we need to plug in - sadly it was closed, end of season, so we drove back to
another aire at aigues mortes.
friendly belgian from last aire had said this was a lovely place, very old walled city, but that there were
a lot of mosquitos at the aire....he showed us his impressive bites!!...so it wasn't our first choice, but
needs must....anyway, he was right on both counts!
town looks gorgeous, completely walled, rather like marrakesh as we drove towards it....plan to check it
out tomorrow, or the next day....
aire is a large carpark (capacity 80 vans) but is virtually empty, 6 vans here, us and a couple of french,
german and dutch....BIG mosquito's though, so we are sprayed all over with repellant : )
nice and peaceful place, with fishing (p very happy about that!) 10 mins. scoot to the town....AND the sun
IS shining, so we are going to chill out and relax for a couple of days, p has some work, c will potter and
route plan etc., before heading towards nimes, montpellier......and on to spain!
tuesday: lots of heavy rain in the night! we were getting a bit of deja vu, but all well, no lake when we
woke up! ha ha
in fact it was a lovely day : )
had fresh croissants which we had ordered yesterday when we checked into the aire - yum, then had a
very relaxed am....
after lunch decided to scoot into aigues mortes and have a look around....found out it was a national
strike in france today so there was no charge to visit the ramparts (usually 7.50 euros each), someone was
VERY pleased about that.....
walked right around the city, took about an hour....very picturesque, with sweeping views across the salt flats.
after that a wander inside the walls, lots of cafe's etc. pretty touristy place - and probably a nightmare in the
summer - but lovely and quiet today....had a drink in the sunshine in place saint louis, then scooted around
for a bit before making our way back to 'mosquito city' for tea....
seriously, we saw one this am that was so BIG we thought it was a daddy long legs!! not funny....it would
be nice to sit outside as pretty mild, but not worth the hassle with the winged demons out there!!
